Being purposeful in life.

While you read through, at the end I will give a secret of what you need to do. There is a solution to have a more fulfilled life, a more zen life. Wait till the end and I will tell you about it.

Some Definitions

Purposeful Definition & Meaning as per Merriam-Webster Dictionary – 1: having a purpose: such as MEANINGFUL – INTENTIONAL -purposeful ambiguity – full of determination – was soft-spoken but purposeful. Also, purposeful means to have a useful purpose or be intentional. Similar to determined, resolute, resolved, or single-minded. If someone is purposeful, they show that they have a definite aim and a strong desire to achieve it. Set goals. Your life purpose includes the core motivational purpose of your life — why you get up in the morning. Purpose can guide life choices, influence behavior, shape purpose, provide direction, and create meaning. For some, purpose and mission go hand in hand—meaningful, rewarding work.

It could be more simple than that…

What if life fulfillment was as simple as being purposeful, that is to be meaningful in life? Many people live their life without knowing their purpose. This does not that their life is useless but in their eyes, it seems that they have not done anything meaningful enough to feel a sense of fulfillment or accomplishment. I am just bringing this idea to the table because I think that this has not been looked into. I did not come across much research about this. I will need to come up with at least one example or two to explain my thought. I was saying that we are all looking to be useful or meaningful in this life. We are looking at it from our own eyes as if we did not do enough or we are looking for a celestial sign to see that we are meaningful. I have good news for you, your life matters more than you ever think.

First things first…

First, I have to clarify that this is not an absolute reality for everyone in the world. The reality may differ from the country, belief, background, or family situation. Yet, when you look at your life since your childhood, you must have had a meaning for someone else like another child at the playground or school, environment, or even to your parent or guardian. May 14, 2019, on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert — Colbert: “What do you think happens when we die, Keanu Reeves?” Reeves: “I know the ones who love us will miss us.”  Either you realize it or you, you must have meant something to a stranger looking at you, a colleague, a brother, sister, or parent, a teacher, a store where you buy your groceries, or a smile you give to someone. The list can go on and on. 

Here’s a story

I grew up in a multicultural background; with people from Europe, China, India, Africa, and many parts of the world. When I was 8 years old, the whole family moved to another region where my dad bought a piece of land. I left a mostly African culture area for a more Hindu area. No need to tell you how I faced discrimination as I was the only one of my “color” in the class and a handful of “us” in the whole school. I had a strong mindset and was intelligent enough to face it. It happened that two years later, our nation became a republic and had a special Flag Raising Ceremony to mark the event. Unfortunately, on that same day, the flag got stuck on the pole and no one, absolutely no one was able to have it fixed, except one little boy from a completely different culture and background, the rejected one. After multiple tentative to get it down, I finally show up and propose to help. I climbed on the pole easily as I had lots of agility at that time and I got the flag down. We had a great celebration time. Today, many still remember that day.

It’s like everyday stuff… 

From my perspective, it was not a big deal at all. I did not feel good when I was badly treated, mocked, or look upon. Yet, I did my way. On that day, I was myself, that same little boy. I did not go back to tell anything about how I was treated but I was just me, and that is enough. Now, look at it another way, what would have happened if I was not there? My teacher, my classmates, the schoolmaster, and the whole school; would have been a sad day instead of rejoicing. If you had been meaningful to at least one person on this earth, either by bringing happiness or a smile to someone else, then you got this.

A great person indeed 

Another person is my dad. This is a very good example of a very hard-working man. As a child, he lost his mum and was rejected by his own dad. He was out of the house very young. He had a difficult life as a child living with families, sometimes in the wood, working to make charcoal from wood, masonry, lorry worker, working on docks where he was lifting 50kgs to 100kgs bags of rice and sugar loading and unloading ships a couple of decades ago; not an easy life. He always dreamt of building his house with his own hand. Guess what, he made it. He built his own house in the region mentioned above. We have a great place to stay when we go on vacation. I am so proud of everything he accomplished. He is a fulfilled man today together with my mum. Often when we have a conversation, he reminds us all that the future is always bright. He accomplished something excellent. My dad found his purpose in life by building a generation of fighters, and strong people. We are strong because he has been strong. We fight because he fought. We move forward because he moved forward. What is your purpose in life?

You are here because you matter. 

You count on someone. There are great things that you can accomplish. You have a meaning and a purpose in life. Maybe you are not aware of it at this time or are overwhelmed by circumstances, but there is still hope. Remember that it is not night all the time. Even in regions where seasons are different like in the Arctics, there is a time when the sun rises and shines for all to see. There could be multiple reasons to feel like giving up. If you are here now, it means that it is not done yet. We are all seeking life’s purpose.

Money, money, money…

There are many things money cannot do, yet money can give you the opportunity to do things that you love like having more time for yourself. Did you know that many people spend so much time taking for others, like working many hours for their boss to make a profit while they have little time for themselves? As the result, you are stressed and tired. Waiting for the next paycheck, children neglected, you have to wait for approved vacation time, and the worst thing about this is that the boss can fire you at any time.

There is a small story in the bible about King David who wanted to build a temple for the Lord. He was not allowed to do so. But he did one thing; he prepared for the constructions and materials required for the building. His son Solomon who was his successor was one of the richest person in the world. I Chronicles Chapter 22 Verse 1 Then David said, “This is the house of the Lord God, and this is the altar of burnt offering for Israel.” 2 So David commanded to gather the aliens who were in the land of Israel, and he appointed masons to cut hewn stones to build the house of God. 3 And David prepared iron in abundance for the nails of the doors of the gates and for the joints, and bronze in abundance beyond measure, 4 and cedar trees in abundance; for the Sidonians and those from Tyre brought much cedar wood to David. 5 Now David said, “Solomon my son is young and inexperienced, and the house to be built for the Lord must be exceedingly magnificent, famous, and glorious throughout all countries. I will now make preparation for it.” So David made abundant preparations before his death.

My Conclusion 

Now conclusion, you do not need to build everything yourself. You can set the path for your next generation. My dad built us a house so we can grow up safe and stable. Now we are grown-ups, we are building vacations for them. I am abroad and my dad can travel. He just bought a second car with the help of my younger brother.
